New sports stadium to benefit entire community

The recent opening of Norwood Secondary College’s new basketball stadium has provided a quality sporting facility for all to enjoy.

The purpose-built sports stadium will not only be available for use by the college but also surrounding communities including Mitcham. Michael Sukkar, Federal Member for Deakin, said the stadium will provide a host of facilities to suit a range of activities, adding:

“Complete with two basketball courts, a foyer, kiosk and café, the stadium is equipped to host a range of sporting and school events.”

In addition, outside school hours the venue will be available every day of the week for hire, making it accessible to a broad section of the community who will be able to include the stadium on flyer printing advertising individual events.

The stadium’s capacity to seat 1,000 has also been seen as a great advantage by principal of Norwood Secondary College Andrew Sloane. He said it would permit pupils from all levels to unite at one time adding:

“For the first time, we have a space that will allow us to hold full school assemblies as well as celebrations of significant events and achievements.”

The facility is able to host netball, basketball and other sporting fixtures. According to Mr Sloane, its opening will also provide an incentive for students to get healthy and fit on the courts.

The Commonwealth Government invested $1.6 million into the project which was jointly funded with the State Governments.
