A multipurpose garden area that has proven popular with residents throughout the City of Whitehorse, including Mitcham, Victoria, has won a major award for design.
Box Hill Gardens Multipurpose Area took the honours in the Urban Design section of the 2014 Australian Architecture Awards.
This latest accolade tops off a great year for the project, which last year won an Architects Award from the Australian Institute of Landscape and was also a Premier’s Design Award nominee.
The area and its major redevelopment program also attracted an award from Parks and Leisure Australia in the 2014 Open Space Development category.
The work of designers NMBW Architecture Studio and ASPECT Studios, the area features state-of-the-art facilities and surfaces which Whitehorse Councillor Robert Chong said made it stand out as a true community hub for recreation and sporting pursuits.
Facilities include outdoor table tennis tables, a netball hoop, a cricket and tennis rebound wall, an outdoor basketball court, ample spectator seating, and recreation areas.
Events and attractions on offer at the Box Hill Gardens are regularly featured on the council’s website, and on brochure and flyer printing campaigns throughout the City of Whitehorse.
The gardens’ ongoing rejuvenation is part of an overall plan which the council finalised in 2011. It also proposes the creation of more open spaces for gatherings, increased seating, a major new playground, and a lighting upgrade.
The project’s latest win now puts it into the running for the National Awards to be held in Darwin on November 6th.
