Mitcham, Victoria, is among many of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to celebrate the 2015 Sustainable Living Week hosted by the City of Whitehorse.
The main aim of the festival is to encourage people of all ages to adopt sustainable living practices while having fun at the same time.
Whitehorse Mayor Andrew Munroe said free workshops and events for community groups, residents, businesses and schools across the community would be on offer during the 10-day programme.
Residents and members of local groups who have actively promoted sustainable lifestyles will be recognised at the Sustainability Awards Night, while other events will include a permaculture blitz with the creation of a kitchen garden by experts.
Adult residents will be given an opportunity to build confidence in riding a bicycle with a free training program, while gardening enthusiasts can learn the finer points of landscape design and good building by renowned guest landscape architects.
Cr Munroe said there was also a great programme scheduled for children, including story time for pre-schoolers, a Yarran Dheran Reserve-based Day in the Bush and a World Water Day to be held at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary.
The community’s green thumbs will also be catered for with events focussed on indigenous gardening, bare-rooted stock and summer pruning.
The council’s website and flyer printing are expected to provide information on the extensive programme, which will run from 19th to 29th March.
