Forum targets small business in retail strips

Small business and their trading conditions in locally-based shopping strips across Victoria, including Mitcham, are in the spotlight as the government seeks to find more ways to help the retail sector.

As part of a state-wide initiative, the government is meeting with representatives from local communities.

Recently, Suburban Development Minister Marlene Kairouz and Small Business Minister Adem Somyurek co-hosted a forum, at which they heard from traders, business owners, councils and industry experts on the opportunities and challenges confronting small business operators within retail strips.

Somyurek said there were many successful and vibrant strips of retail shops in Victoria, but the government was aware that traders also faced many challenges, adding:

“This forum has helped all parties learn more about a complex issue and drive the growth of small businesses operating out of shopping strips.”

There are many ways local traders have been proactive in attracting shoppers, such as flyer printing and distribution. The forum Forms part of a much broader government initiative that seeks to help operators of small businesses state-wide. The Small Business Regulation Review, which targeted the red Tape and leases involved in the retail sector, was also part of the initiative.

Somyurek said shopping strips are an important part of the community because they provided jobs, helped economies grow and are a vital hub for residents to socialise and connect.
