The Victorian Government is seeking young aspiring filmmakers from Mitcham and across the State to enter a competition that will highlight on road safety.
Jointly run in conjunction with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and partner Village Cinemas, the annual film competition for youth is called Split Second and is being held for the third time. This year's contest encourages entrants to come up with a film idea that focuses on distracted driving.
The competition is seen as a way to empower youth to make better and safer choices while driving, according to Minister for Roads Ben Carroll.
According to findings of the Commission's Road Safety Monitor, the 18 to 25 age group is most likely to suffer distraction when behind the wheel of a car compared to older drivers.
Entries for the competition opened recently and target filmmakers aged 18 to 25. Distracted Driving is the theme, with those participating required to submit an idea for a 45-second film. To advertise competitions like this, poster printing is often employed.
Judges, who represent various sections of the advertising and film industry, as well as the TAC, will select the eventual winner, who will then take the driving seat to make the short film a reality, with the assistance of a $50,000 budget for production and the professional acting skills of Firass Dirani.
Additional prize money of $5000 will also go to the winner, and Village Cinema will screen the film at venues across the state.
The deadline for entries is September 23.
