An accessible opera is playing in Nunawading in May, and it will be suitable for all members of the family.
With Elizabeth Hill-Cooper as director, The Lyrebird’s Voice will be brought to life by the Victorian Opera Chamber Orchestra.
A lyrebird is a ground-dwelling native bird that is able to copy sounds from the environment, both artificial and natural in origin. Peter Rutherford developed the story of The Lyrebird’s Voice in 2023, along with members of the New Work Opera Studio. The humorous and spirited plot involves a bird that is master of mimicry and is ultimately banished by the flock for being too deceitful. On leaving, the flock bestows a curse so that the banished bird is only able to copy sounds and never use its own voice.
The isolated bird meets many animals in the bush, such as beetles, kangaroos and a cat, whereupon they are all able to rejoice in the power and joy of being different and the ways in which they use their voices.
Colourful poster printing is often undertaken in order to advertise family appropriate shows.
The Lyrebird’s Voice – Victorian Opera will be playing at The Round, which can be found at 379-399 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading. The performance will run from Thursday, 8 until Saturday, 10 May. Performance times differ. Tickets cost from $28.
