Council issues challenge for people to go without plastics

Residents in Mitcham, Victoria, and surrounding areas have been asked to go without plastic for a full month.

The Plastic Free challenge has been issued by Whitehorse City Council in an effort to help eliminate the material from landfills.

Current figures indicate that plastic waste going to landfill has reached one million tonnes, according to Councillor Denise Massoud.

She said many items are only used once, such as coffee cups, straws, cling wrap, plastic bottles and plastic Bags, as well as everyday products ranging from shampoo and toothbrushes to food Packaging.

The council has taken the initiative of challenging organisations, businesses, families, schools and individuals to avoid single-use plastic for the entire month of July.

Cr Massoud said taking part in the Plastic Free July programme would open many people’s eyes to the major impact the products have on the environment, and the extent of its use within the community.

She said those taking part in the challenge would need to come up with alternatives to plastic, or find ways to reuse plastic products instead of throwing them out after using them once only.

The challenge has been advertised on flyer printing and the council website, which also offers a few tips to take on board. These included making sandwich Bags out of reused bread Bags, choosing bowls instead of cling wrap to store food, and buying milk in cartons instead of plastic bottles.
