Community House in Mitcham keeps residents connected

Mitcham Community House is finding ways to stay connected to its community amid the Covid-19 outbreak. The non-profit organisation has provided courses and activities to local residents of the City of Whitehorse for over 45 years; but these are currently postponed for safety and social distancing reasons.

The Community House is making use of its website to notify residents of changes and to provide information regarding its hope to present some of its courses online. This would potentially provide residents who are in isolation an opportunity to learn new skills during this period.

Social distancing and isolation have the potential to impact mental health and wellbeing according to Lifeline. This can be reflected through lack of sleep, depression, loneliness and physical symptoms, among others. Lifeline recommends staying in touch with family and community as a means to combat symptoms, and also suggests that self-improvement and learning a new hobby or skill goes a long way in fighting depression and loneliness. Mitcham Community House will benefit its local community should they take their courses online.

Other important information on the community website includes instructional Posters for families on how to protect themselves during the pandemic, accurate health information as well as an opportunity to sign up to their newsletter. Many community organisations may make use of graphic design to ensure their websites are relevant and informative, enabling their community to remain engaged.

The Lancet, a reputed medical journal, recently published a review showing the effects of community engagement during isolation. Findings show that there is beneficial gain when people remain connected and informed during quarantine periods.
