The Idles consists of Adam Devonshire (bass guitar), Joe Talbot (vocals), Lee Kiernan and Mark Bowen (guitar) and Jon Beavis (drums). Formed in 2009, the band released their first album, Brutalism in 2017, followed by Joy as an Act of Resistance the following year. In 2020, they released their first album, Ultra Mono, to reach the top of the UK album charts. This also won an Ivor Novello award.
Described as a political band, lyrics include references to mass media, immigration, feminism and war. The latest album, Tangk, is being promoted on the current tour. It is seen by some as an album of love songs; as Talbot wrote in the Big Issue:
“I realised with TangK that I wanted love. I needed love. So I had to make love and emit love.”
