Having the number one user-rated album in 2020 for Windswept Adan, the ethereal sound and vision of Ichiko Aoba will no doubt attract fans and the musically-curious in the Melbourne CBD area in May.
Ichiko Aoba is a thirty-five year old Japanese singer/songwriter, playing and composing mostly on guitar, although other instruments mastered include the flute, piano, accordion and clarinet. She is inspired by both Studio Ghibli and Disney, both of which featured in her childhood and adolescence.
Releasing her first album, Razor Girl, at nineteen, Aoba has gone on to release many more. The 2020 album, Windswept Adan, received praise from The Guardian, The Needle Drop and Pitchfork and was about a girl who travels to the fantasy island of Adan. In her latest album, Luminescent Creatures, Aoba considers what would be left if the girl and island inhabitants all disappeared.
The sea features heavily in this latest work, as Aoba has always felt the pull of the ocean. Her performances are quiet and unassuming but still captivating for an audience whom she takes on a journey, piercing through cultural divides and language barriers.
