War historians and lovers of popular music of the time may enjoy the Good Evening Vietnam evening taking place at the Greensborough RSL in August. The evening particularly commemorates the 58th anniversary of Long Tan and the 521 Australian servicemen who lost their lives during the conflict.
The Battle of Long Tan occurred in August 1966, during the Vietnam War. Involving Australian forces, the assault happened over three days. It was originally considered a defeat, but then was later considered a victory due to the significance of the ambush and the securing of the area around Long Tan.
The evening at the Greensborough RSL involves musician Mike Brady with guest Normie Rowe as they play songs significant of the era. They are ably supported by Michael Cristiano and the Band of Brothers. Popular songs at the time include Where Have All the Flowers Gone? (by the Kingston Trio), Gimme Shelter (by The Rolling Stones) and Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. This is a one-off show that will take the audience on a musical journey of this evocative time period in recent Australian history.
