Work set to begin on new library and youth hub

Caulfield residents are among many within the City of Glen Eira set to benefit from the development of the $6.2 million Bentleigh Library and Youth Hub, which is on track for work to commence in March.

The library is to undergo a full transformation to become a future-ready community centre that will incorporate the city's Youth Services. It will also include a raft of multipurpose spaces that can be easily adapted to cater for the delivery of events and programmes for everyone, from senior citizens and families to adults and young people. Facilities will range from an editing and recording suite to a play centre and pedestrian plaza.

A loan of $5 million from the State Government's Community Infrastructure Loans Scheme has been provided to assist in the cost of the project, which is expected to be completed within the next 18 months to 2 years.

Mayor of Glen Eira Margaret Esakoff said that during the construction work, library services will be accessible after a three week transition period at McKinnon Library from March 29. The location will also host Youth Services. She added:

"If library members can't find what they need, Books will be brought to them from other branches or they can visit Carnegie, Caulfield and Elsternwick libraries."

Flyer printing campaigns have often been used to make sure community members are aware of major changes to council services.

Bentleigh Library is scheduled to close on March 7.
