Smaller businesses throughout Caulfield, Victoria, and surrounding areas are benefitting from an innovative initiative that has teamed them up with computer-savvy university students.
As part of Glen Eira City Council’s BusEd Program, university students are working with business owners to develop websites. Swinburne and Monash university students are undertaking the work as part of their curriculum.
According to a council spokesperson, the aim was to give each student an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned to a real-life situation.
He said it was also providing a kick start for local businesses into the digital arena, allowing them to take up the methods used to market online, improve information management, and interact with their clients.
The technology, he added, could also be put to good use for innovative ways to promote the individual business. This could include creating designs for flyer and catalogue printing.
In return, company owners would be required to ensure the experience creates the best possible results for the business, students, and the overall BusEd program.
Between the Ears proprietor Leah Fogarty said her psychology services website had been redeveloped to incorporate session booking and resource purchases online. It was also set up to make the most of social media activities in a streamlined and effective manner.
She said the work was undertaken over many months and not only provided students with a real-life project, but was also a great learning experience all round.
