Exhibition reveals private diversity of home life in Glen Eira

Private domestic spaces and their diversity within Caufield and the surrounding local community is the focus of a new exhibition to be held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery.

The exhibition, which is entitled ‘Home’, showcases the domestic spaces and the private realms people inhabit, cultural and personal identity, memory, history, and relationships.

The project was commissioned by the City Council in 2016, after which Flyers and media reports were issued inviting interest from residents who were prepared to have their homes photographed.

A Glen Eira City Council Gallery spokesman said photographer Linda Wachtel took a series of photographs that explore each domestic situation’s diversity within the local community, domestic décor, daily rituals, family values, relationships, and spiritual, cultural and personal concerns.

In addition, he said, the richly layered exhibition, which highlights imagined and real visions of home, will also include works by Lee Grant, Prudence Flint, Graham Fletcher, Jane Burton, Wolfgang Sievers, Noel McKenna, and Janina Green.

The spokesman said several public events have been organised to coincide with the exhibition, including an address on March 17 by Wachtel on her role as part of the project’s commission.

On March 24, residents whose homes were photographed for the showing will join with Gallery Curator Diane Soumilas to discuss their experiences, followed on March 31 by an address by Melbourne School of Design Director Professor Alan Pert.

The exhibition is on show from March 3 until April 2.
