Caulfield residents who believe they have Irish heritage should take a trip to the Immigration Museum in central Melbourne this weekend for the museum’s Irish Festival. The festival will celebrate Irish culture both past and present with a host of events throughout the day.
Around 10% of Australians think they have Irish ancestry, but the event will appeal to people who simply enjoy Irish culture as well.
During the day there will be musical performances from contemporary Irish Australian singers, including Pat McKernan and performers from the Lake School of Celtic Music, Song and Dance. For those who would like to join in, workshops on fiddle playing and traditional ceilidh dancing will be held.
A special exhibition will explore stories of Irish immigrants, while representatives from local Irish community organisations will be available to tell recent migrants where they can find help and meet other Irish immigrants.
Anyone who is interested in researching their Irish family history can join the family research workshop to learn more about documents and information, which may expand their family story. Genealogy is becoming increasingly popular, as is collecting family stories. Printing companies can help preserve these stories for future generations by producing small Books telling a family story or using poster printing to document the family tree.
The Irish Festival runs from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, November 18. Entry is included in the ticket price for the museum, which is $10 for adults and free for children. For more information, visit the Immigration Museum’s website.Get a Free Quote for Books
