Council prepares to celebrate World War I Centenary with exhibition

A quilt created by schoolchildren for Caulfield Hospital patients in 1916 will be showcased as part of a major exhibition to be held at Glen Eira City Council Gallery.

The social history exhibition entitled The Wounded Soldier: Glen Eira and a Community of Care will display a number of objects created in Caulfield, Victoria, as well as exploring the significance and impact of the area hosting the state’s repatriation care centre for World War I wounded soldiers, the Glen Eira Military Hospital.

A council spokesman said images and objects for the Wounded Soldier exhibition have been provided from collections nationwide, including The Australian War Memorial, Red Cross, Museum Victoria, the Medical History Museum, RSL Clubs and The Victorian Racing Museum.

He said Catalogues for the exhibition will also include a modern day quilt made by local children under the guidance of Deborah O’Toole. Initiated by Glen Eira Council, the workshop saw children make a range of fabric squares, which are now being combined to form the quilt. It will be featured alongside the 1916 quilt, or ‘comfort’ as it was once known.

The display, he said, will also include an historic book, which was produced by the Caulfield Red Cross Branch and fascinating artwork created by hospital patient Bernard Haines.

A range of events and public programmes will be held to coincide with the exhibition, which is due to run from November 3 to 20.
