Work to start soon on large environmental mural

A large mural is set to turn heads of residents near Braeside and across Kingston City in the months ahead.

The task of creating the environmentally themed mural has been given to talented artist Mike Makatron, along with Leo Gester, a creative producer, and the finished work will crown transformation work already undertaken at Horscroft Place Pocket Park.

In a statement, Mayor of Kingston Steve Staikos explained the work at the park was to improve both accessibility and the streetscape from the shops and Moorabbin station to Moorabbin Reserve, adding:

“With the assistance of the Victorian Government through the Suburban Parks Program, Council purchased 2 Horscroft Place in 2019 and demolished the old factory building, to connect it to the Healey Street Reserve and create a welcoming thoroughfare for football fans, students and community members to utilise.”

The park now boasts a number of features, including a lawn, accessible pathways, drinking fountains, shady trees, bespoke seating and bins, as well as a large brick wall, which will provide an ideal backdrop for the new mural.

Murals such as the one commissioned for the Moorabbin site have often been featured in brochure printing campaigns that list local places of interest.

Makatron is an artist who has taken his craft internationally and has two decades of experience, while Gester has been managing and overseeing cultural projects for 10 years. Work on the mural should start soon, and it is expected to take a few weeks to complete.
