Braeside to host talk on local wildlife

Braeside residents who have an interest in the natural environment might like to attend a free guided talk about nocturnal creatures in the area.

Braeside Park is the location for the public to meet and follow a guide who will be talking primarily about the possums in the area, as the animals break cover to forage as the sun goes down.

Typically, the varieties of possums found will include brushtail and ringtail, among others.

The brushtail is approximately cat-size, with a bushy tail and pointed ears, and tends to be solitary, preferring to live in tree hollows. Ringtails tend to be much smaller, with a thin tail and rounded ears. They are more sociable and tend to live in small groups, often using leaves and twigs to build spherical dreys in which to live.

During the walk, the guide might also be able to point out other nocturnal creatures, such as bats and tawny frogmouths.

Urban parks tend to make good hunting grounds as there are typically vegetables, fruit and other edible plants on offer, as well as a supply of water in the form of wetlands.

Park volunteers might make use of local printing services in order to produce Posters and other materials advertising events that can be displayed in the area.

The Secret Life of Possums, a free guided walk, is taking place on Friday, 3 July and Friday, 10 July, from 7 pm until 8.30 pm. The meeting place is the Braeside Park Visitor Centre, 470 Lower Dandenong Road, Braeside.
