Sweet treats to be sampled at Victorias State Library

Foodies will enjoy the State Library of Victoria’s current exhibition celebrating the history of food and recipe Books, including the stories of local culinary figures such as Guy Grossi and Stephanie Alexander.

Recipe Books are a staple product for printing companies, with many new cookbooks from both celebrity and local chefs produced each year. This exhibition showcases rare manuscripts and recipe Books, including Australia’s first cookbook, published way back in 1864.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Gusto!’, also covers the history of cuisine and cooking in Victoria, including indigenous foods, viticulture, and rationing. Among the more interesting exhibits is an actual First World War army biscuit.

Braeside residents who would like to taste food as well as read about it, should book a seat at the Library’s High Tea this Saturday, September 22, starting at 2:00 pm. Held in the Library’s Red Rotunda among its collection of oil paintings, visitors will be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine before having the opportunity to taste some savoury and sweet treats. Afterwards, guests will be able to visit the exhibition at their leisure.

For people who cannot make this weekend, another two high teas will be held in October and November. Bookings are required for both.

There are a number of other events running during the exhibition, including a seminar on the history of women in Victoria’s culinary history and a discussion on how social media is allowing the general public to become food critics. More information can be found on the State Library of Victoria’s website.
