Kingston Council will carry out the works between Carrington Street and Bank Road on the Nepean Highway following a boost in State Government funding connected to the removal of Frankston Line level crossings.
Mayor of Kingston Steve Staikos described the planned upgrade as exciting and said the move will not only improve the aesthetics of the shopping strip, but also local businesses, while making the shopping strip more accessible for the entire community. He added:
“Kingston has been working closely with the state government throughout the LXRP process, and the additional $2.3 million in funding will enable us to make a huge difference to the Edithvale business community as they recover from the challenges posed by the pandemic.”
The mayor said the upgrades would be finalised following discussions with business owners, the Edithvale Collective and community members. The major facelift is expected to deliver paving, street furniture, new landscaping and improvements to the streetscape.
Flyer printing campaigns have often been used to alert shoppers and residents to major works, such as the Edithvale upgrade.
According to a spokesperson for the Edithvale Collective, which has been operating since 2017, the condition of the shopping precinct had deteriorated and was not in keeping with the quaint village and its beautiful setting central to both Port Phillip Bay beaches in one direction and wetlands in the other.
