City of Kingston residents are being encouraged to pick up their cameras to celebrate cultural diversity in the area.
The Kingston City Council is holding a special exhibition to mark Cultural Diversity Week and is asking residents from across the area, including Braeside, to help create the show.
The exhibition will highlight people from different backgrounds photographed in a way that celebrates harmony and does away with stereotypes.
Printing services will be used to create a show from the best images submitted, which will run as part of Cultural Diversity Week next month.
The City of Kingston’s mayor, Councillor Geoff Gledhill, said the municipality was home to people from many different backgrounds. He said:
“This exhibition is open to everyone and we hope people of all backgrounds and ages will take part to help showcase our diverse community. Sharing photographs and stories is a great way for people of different backgrounds to come together in a creative way to build friendships and share positive stories.”
Everyone is encouraged to take photos and include a sentence about what it means to them. The event is open to groups and individuals from all backgrounds, but the images should incorporate some sense of identity.
Entries close on Monday, 2nd March and the exhibition will be opened on Thursday, 19th March at the Shirley Burke Theatre. For more information, contact the council’s community development co-ordinator.
