Council urges residents to safeguard natural environment

Residents of Braeside and across the City of Kingston are being urged to help in safeguarding the 13km stretch of reserves, beaches and important vegetation, as well as the many natural assets of the area.

These natural recreation parts of the city are a huge drawcard to an increasing number of visitors and locals, especially during summer, according to Mayor of Kingston Steven Staikos, who also reiterated the pressure such demand puts on the area's natural environment. He added:

“We need to make sure that while we are playing, walking, relaxing and celebrating we also respect the precious environment around us. Help us to keep Kingston clean and beautiful, remember to remove and bin all rubbish when you leave for the day.”

In addition to the beaches, the city also hosts valuable, high-quality habitat vegetation, which exists at Mordialloc Creek and other locations, and to protect it for future generations, the mayor urged people to stick to established pathways.

Signs prepared by professional printing services are often erected in areas such as these to remind visitors to be mindful of the natural environment. Any vandalism of such vegetation should be reported, as it is an offense and can lead to prosecution.

Staikos said the vegetation is a vital element to stabilising dunes and protecting the area against erosion. It also provides local fauna with valuable habitat, while also giving the community a place to relax and enjoy.
