Residents of the City of Kingston, including Braeside, are being invited to inspect a unique home that is the epitome of sustainability.
The home is owned by Travis and Asha Ridgway, who in 2015 set out to realise a dream of turning it into a truly sustainable structure but with a difference.
As the next step towards transforming what were once only sketches on note pads into the real thing, the pair gutted the home until all that remained was a roof and the barest of timbers inside.
They then embarked on rebuilding an extended residence using a mix of repurposed and environmentally friendly materials.
Early in 2017, after sharing the workload with EarthHouse Australia in Clayton South – a firm Travis helped to create - the couple moved in.
According to Sustainable House Day organisers, the end result of all their toil was a northeast facing residence that now needs minimal artificial cooling/heating, it hosts battery read solar power that is set to go off-grid and all windows are double glazed.
The home at 28 Fiddes Street, Moorabbin will be open for inspection on Sustainable House Day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on September 17.
