Tonsley to provide programming course for girls

Female high school students in the Tonsley area can soon enjoy a workshop that explores artificial intelligence (AI) and Markov Chains and is suitable for all - even for those who have never encountered the programming language Python.

Markov Chains refers to models where the probability of a state going forwards relies solely on the current state, and not past states; for example, a sunny day today might reasonably predict a sunny day tomorrow, but this is based on today’s weather, and not the weather before today. This is called a memoryless state.

The workshop is run by the Girls’ Programming Network (GPN) and presents workshops that delve into information technology, programming and computer science, all suitable for years seven to 12. The tutors attending might be STEM university students or software engineers from companies like Google or Data61. Previous projects have included the creation of online games, chatbots and apps.

The GPN embraces values of fun, providing a social space that is aspirational, relevant and challenging, welcoming a diverse range of skills in a nationwide network of support of tutors and students. A recent participant said:
“The most important part of GPN is the inclusive community and having fun.”

Local printing services are often employed to produce informative leaflets that may be available for distribution within workshops.

The Girls’ Programming Network Adelaide Term 1 2026 starts on Sunday, 22 March, from 9.30 am until 4 pm. The venue is Flinders University. No experience is necessary. Lunch and healthy snacks will be provided, and the workshop is free to attend.
