Those in the Tonsley area who are interested in the social and cultural history of the built environment may wish to watch a documentary about a local landmark store that no longer exists.
ABCX Productions is producing a documentary about John Martin’s (fondly known as Johnnies), a department store that closed almost 30 years ago.
The store had its origins in a draper’s shop called Peters and Martin, which was started by Otto Peters and John Martin in 1866 on Rundle Street in Adelaide.
Latterly owned by the Hayward family, the store gained iconic status and was responsible for the Christmas Pageant and for sponsorship of the Adelaide Festival of Arts.
The evening will involve a 20-minute preview of the film, followed by a conversation session with the team from ABCX, including the director Greg Ashman and producer Kristy Copley. In addition, Paul Flavel, the author of John Martin’s, The Story of South Australia’s Beloved Department Store, will be on hand to join the conversation.
Local brochure printing is one way in which events like this can be advertised within a community.
The Big Store – John Martin’s Documentary is being shown on Friday, 1 May, from 7 pm until 8.30 pm, at the Marion Cultural Centre. Tickets cost $15. The event includes a short preview, followed by a question-and-answer session.
