Those living in or around Adelaide can enjoy the free, much-loved Christmas parade in November.
A whistle sounds at 9.30 on 14th November to announce the beginning of the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant. It is a community event, covering 3.5 kilometres, to include colourful characters in flamboyant costumes, clowns, floats, music, dancers, choirs and bands, all to enrapture those attending and mark the beginning of Christmas proper. All spectators are encouraged to be behind the Blue Honour Line, introduced in 1958 so that as the pageant grew, there is a dedicated area for people to sit, stand and be safe.
The pageant has been the traditional beginning of the festive season in the area since 1933. All ages will crowd the streets to watch the parade and the event is even broadcast on local television. The route starts at South Terrace and ends at Beehive corner, near the Rundle Mall.
In conjunction with Events South Australia, the spectacle has become widely celebrated and cherished and marks the welcoming of Father Christmas. In excess of 330,000 are likely to be in attendance on the day.
