What's Happening in Milton, QLD…

Work underway on $3.4m Visitor Centre in Botanic Gardens

Construction has begun on the new $3.4 million Visitor Information Centre at Mount Coot-tha, Queensland.

The centre will be located about six kilometres west of Brisbane City and service an expected 700,000 visitors annually, including residents from surrounding areas such as Milton who often take part in bush walking, cycling and other recreational pursuits.

The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium and Brisbane Botanic Gardens are also major attractions in Mount Coot-tha, which has been described as a premier eco-tourism destination.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Botanic Gardens would host the new centre that will effectively replace the small brochures kiosk, which was established in 1977 to provide information on local attractions to park visitors.

He said the precinct’s growing popularity combined with revitalisation work being undertaken throughout the area meant the new facility would be able to cater for international and local visitors for a long time into the future.

Activities and the many local events, he added, will be showcased in interactive displays once the centre is completed.

In addition, volunteers will be available to assist visitors with everything from the abundance of 100,000 plants to popular activities including bushwalks and Planetarium visits. The Brisbane Botanic Gardens hosts an estimated150 dedicated Volunteer Guides.

Cr Quirk said the construction of the Visitor Information Centre is just one of the projects of a $15 million Mount Coot-tha revitalisation to be undertaken between now and 2020.
