Traffic congestion reducing in Milton

Commuters around Milton are benefiting from shorter journey times following the opening of the new Legacy Way tunnel, according to the city council.

Figures from Brisbane City Council show that traffic along Milton Road had been reduced by about 16%, cutting journey times by up to 30%during afternoon peak travel and up to 21% in the mornings.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk told The Brisbane Times that while it was early days, the tunnel did seem to be creating quicker journey times. He said:

“With Milton Road continually listed within the top-five busiest corridors for Brisbane, this is a good outcome and one we expect will continue to deliver benefits for motorists.”

Councilor Quirk said the council would continue to focus on reducing congestion and upgrading the city’s roads over the coming years, and had a number of projects already underway. The council could use flyer and poster printing to keep its residents up to date with future work.

The Legacy Way tunnel connects the Western Freeway at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove and drivers are charged a toll to use the route. Some of the money from the toll goes to nonprofit organisation Legacy, after which the tunnel is named, which helps families of Australian veterans who have been seriously injured or killed in service.
