New school in Milton area delayed for consultation

The Queensland Education Department has delayed the scheduled opening date for a new school in the riverside suburb of Toowong, located near Milton, to allow for further consultation within the community.

The old Toowong bowls club was selected as an appropriate site, as pressure has been building on nearby schools to accept growing enrolment numbers. The plan was for a progressive design to maximise the available land by developing upwards to accommodate up to 900 students.

The community agreed that a new school is needed. However, feedback has identified several areas of concern, including traffic and the environment. Responses to consultation in 2021 identified that the community felt a 2023 opening date did not allow sufficient time to identify alternate sites and respond to significant environmental issues.

The State Government believes that with further community consultation scheduled during 2022, finalising the design by the end of the year is possible. Making use of flyer printing can help to improve engagement when seeking community feedback for developments such as this.

In total, the State Government plans to build 14 new schools over the next three years at a cost of $1.2 billion. The Toowong development will cost over $90 million and will deliver 200 jobs.

The school will enrol students from prep to year six, and the government is confident that enrolment will be available from the new date of January 2024.
