Popular artist Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, more famously known as The Weeknd, will be performing two dates at The Suncorp Stadium in November, to the joy of fans in the Milton area.
Tesfaye started his career anonymously in 2009 through the platform YouTube. By 2011, he had founded the XO record label, and later signed to Republic Records, before contributing to film soundtracks such as Fifty Shades of Grey.
Later albums went on to garner critical and commercial success, with music that spans R&B, pop and new wave genres. Firmly rooted in unconventionality, and often singing falsetto, Tesfaye’s musical catalogue is easily identifiable.
Known to be a very private man, interviews are seldom forthcoming, as Tesfaye prefers the medium of social media, rarely agreeing to face-to-face interviews.
Awards, however, have been plentiful. There have been four Grammys and twenty Billboard Music Awards, as well as American Music Awards. Tesfaye is known for his philanthropy and for the After Hours Til Dawn tour, is donating $1 for every ticket sold to the XO Humanitarian Fund.
