Exhibition traces history of Brisbane River

The Brisbane River and its relationship with the residents of Brisbane City, including Milton, has been the focus of a major exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane, which is coming to an end after an almost three-year showing.

The River: A History of Brisbane opened at the museum in 2013 and has since taken visitors on a journey of ever-changing tidal proportions as it explored the river’s relationship with the people of Brisbane.

According to a spokesman, the Brisbane River has become one of the city’s defining symbols and its presence not only inspired the original establishment of Brisbane, but also provided sanctuary, opportunities and, at times, heartbreak.

He said the exhibition offered a fascinating look at the important role the river played in the city’s growth, the industry it harboured along its shores, its discovery and the decision to establish a capital city, as well as the Brisbane River’s importance to traditional owners living in the area in pre-settlement days.

The spokesman said the exhibition, which has been featured on promotional Brochures at the museum since 2013, also included a stunning showcase of City of Brisbane objects and artworks.

The exhibition, which will close on January 27, 2016, comprises six themes relating to the river. These include its Beauty, Crossings of the River, Within Reach, Embrace, Shaping Forces, and Watershed. Admission is free.
