Cupcake Day aims to fight animal cruelty

An animal charity’s annual event will give the community a chance to raise much needed funds.

Residents in the inner-city suburb of Milton will be among thousands to take part in the national RSPCA Cupcake Day 2014.

Since its inception seven years ago, the event has raised over $6.5m.

Many Queensland businesses, ranging from printing companies and retail outlets to professional offices, have supported the event in the past and are being encouraged to take part again.

Organisers commented that the power of the cupcake is evidenced in what can be achieved. For example, the sale at $2 each of two cupcakes can provide a toy to keep a dog engaged and happy, five cupcakes will be buy a litter tray to toilet train a kitten or cat, 15 would provide vaccination for a puppy, 50 would allow a dog or cat to be desexed, and 150 cupcakes would subsidise the prosecution of a cruelty offender.

Anyone wishing to participate in the August 18th event can do so in a number of ways, including buying a cupcake, donating online, getting their workplace involved, or by staging their own Cupcake Day event by registering online at the RSPCA website.

The RSPCA is renowned for helping animals in their hour of need, with rehabilitation and rescue operations throughout the country costing over $50m each year. Less than five percent is funded by the Government.
