Council finishes extensive regeneration of local activity area
Milton residents can now enjoy a new park and recreational facility on their doorstep with the completion of the Frew Park project.
The council initiative has revamped the former Milton Tennis Centre and Milton Bowl into a new inner city park, which features both tennis courts and large outdoor spaces.
The Milton Tennis Centre, which hosted the first Australian Open in 1969, has been renamed the Roy Emerson Tennis Centre. The new facility features six tennis courts and a rebound court, as well as a food and drink outlet.
Run by Tennis Gear Australia, the centre will be available for casual games as well as running classes. Flyer printing and poster printing is already being used to advertise the first of these, which will be a tennis camp held during December for youngsters aged between four and 17.
As well as the new tennis courts, the park has a space dedicated to older children that features a large climbing wall, slides, climbing nets and seating.
Other features include picnic areas and outdoor barbecues, exercise equipment, and signs exploring some of the site's history. The large open space within the park has been named after Brisbane tennis player Wendy Turnbull, who was successful on the women's tennis tour in both singles and doubles.
The park was officially opened on Saturday, November 29th with a party attended by Brisbane's Lord Mayor Councillor Graham Quick.
