Beat scientist to play in Milton

Innovative drumming has always been a cornerstone of progressive jazz, and genre fans in the Milton area may be keen to know that a skilled contemporary artist in the field will be playing locally.

Makaya McCraven was born in 1983. His mother is singer and flautist Agnes Zsigmondi and his father is African-American jazz drummer, Stephen McCraven. Growing up in this creative environment led McCraven to be drawn to folk music, music of tradition and of collective psyche from a young age. McCraven also drew from the hip-hip scene of the nineties and began to blend these influences together.

Improvising jazz nights in the 2010s and sampling music from previous generations all helped to support his self-confessed label as a “beat scientist”. McCraven is making his Australian debut with “In These Times” (XL Recordings) where he will fuse his knowledge and experience, putting him in the vanguard of jazz heavyweights with an ability to create music with a modern twist. This latest album release in 2022 will likely feature heavily in current shows, as a representation of an interwoven tapestry of forms with musical brilliance and virtuosity.

Unique performances like this one often look to local print shops for advertising.

Makaya McCraven is appearing at Warehouse 25, 25 Finchley Street, Milton on 38th October at 6pm. Tickets cost $55.85.
