Asian culture to be showcased in Brisbane

Brisbane celebrates the magic of Asia over the coming months with the annual BrisAsia festival starting at the end of January.

The festival, which is organised by Brisbane City Council, is designed to highlight the culture bought to the city by its Asian migrants.

The celebrations start on Wednesday January 29th with the first of five days of activities held around Sunnybank to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The fun includes dragon dances, noodle making and calligraphy demonstrations. On Friday, January 31, Chinatown will also become awash with colour with its own three-day new year party, including firecrackers and traditional music and dance.

Visitors from Milton can even get involved in the festival with hands-on events, such as tai chi and karate classes, and there are art workshops for both adults and children including jewellery making and origami. Other events include live music, cooking demonstrations, and a film festival.

During the festival, the Gallery of Modern Art is also publicising its latest exhibition by Chinese born artist Cai Guo-Qiang, called ‘Falling Back to Earth’.

The exhibition features several installations, including two new works inspired by the Queensland landscape, with the central piece featuring sculptures of 99 animals from around the world.

Catalogue printing enables visitors to take home a permanent record of exhibition, while a story book for children, developed with input from the artist, is also available.
