Residents and surf lovers from Brookvale, New South Wales, as well as surrounding areas within the Warringah Council area, will be reliving a century-old surfing moment during the staging of the Duke’s Day Centenary Celebrations at Freshwater Beach.
A highlight of the weekend will be a re-enactment of a feat originally undertaken 100 years ago by Hawaii’s Duke Kahanamoku – the riding of a massive 38kg surfboard made of solid timber.
Exhibitions, events, surf-riding, and associated beach activities will provide non-stop entertainment and fun.
An open invitation has been extended to anyone who revels in the surf, sun, and beach, including non-surfers, those who chase the waves, and swimmers of all ages.
Surf riding exhibitions of a non-competitive nature will also be held on the beach, and these will include the once common 16ft boards known as Ancient Hawaiian Olos.
Professional surfers will also be conducting some on-the-spot lessons for anyone interested in giving it a go.
Accompanying the outdoor program will be a unique collection of boards than spans the last 100 years, as well as photography and art exhibits, classic Kombis, a swap and collectables market of memorabilia, surfboard shaping, presentations, and much more.
Organisers have undertaken flyer printing to advertise the event, which is set to be held from January 9th to 10th at Freshwater Beach.
