Workshop to share secrets of successful rain barrelling

By reducing the amount of water used for irrigating gardens and lowering the level of storm water runoff, a decorated rain barrel can be as attractive as it is functional. Residents of Wauwatosa who would like to install one on their property may want to make sure they make time for a rain barrel workshop this summer.

Each person who attends the Rain Barrel Workshop, which is being offered by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), will walk away with a greater knowledge of the benefits of capturing and reusing rainwater. To help them get started, they will also be going home with a free rain barrel of their own.

The information session will start at 9:00 am, and the participants will learn about the installation and care one of these barrels. They will also discover ways the water collected can be utilized and how, by reducing the amount of storm runoff, they will help to reduce the amount of pollution in lakes and other waterways.

A workshop like this can be an easy way to encourage the public to lend the environment a helping hand. Manuals that cover the installation and maintenance of rain barrels can be prepared by a printing services company, and one can be tucked into each barrel before it is distributed to the public.

The MMSD Headquarters, which can be found at 260 West Seeboth Street, hosts this event on July 13. More information and an opportunity to register to receive a free rain barrel can be found on its online event page.
