The building at 215 N. Webster Avenue in Green Bay had been a school for 102 years. MKE View took over the property and has converted it into luxury apartments with 23 units. Kitchen counters now sit where blackboards were, and the space where the teachers’ desk used to sit now holds kitchen islands. The closets once reserved for coats are now housing washing machines.
The entire renovation cost about $10m. An open house was held where prospective tenants, community leaders and history buffs were able to get a look at how MKE View modernized the property. Banner printing is often used at open houses.
Most who saw the conversion were impressed by it. Kelly Irmen who was a kindergarten student at Whitney School in the 1970s, said to the Green Bay Press Gazette:
“I had to show up and see it. It’s very nice…I wish they’d do this to more buildings.”
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was ensuring that the building’s historic feel was maintained. MKE View worked closely with the Park Service to ensure that wooden bleachers, ticket booths located under a stairwell, and as much of the original wooden flooring as possible were preserved.
