Major Green Bay road reopens

Webster Avenue is now open to the public after a year of being closed for construction.

The part of the road that was being reworked stretched from University to Radisson. Vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles were given permission to use the road from Radisson to East River. The construction and expansion of this Webster Avenue were funded by the City of Green Bay and the Federal Highway Administration to the tune of $13.3m.

The project included many types of work. The major job was replacing and upgrading the underground utilities that ran under it and replacing the roadway’s concrete. In order to allow for the road to be expanded, 24 houses adjacent to the road were bought and torn down. The extra space allowed for lane expansion, along with the construction of pedestrian recreation paths and cycling lanes. On such projects, graphic design is sometimes used for a visual presentation of the work that needs to be done and where.

A railroad crossing close to Eastman Avenue was also upgraded. The project was completed successfully thanks to the coordination of several private utility companies, consultants, and contractors as well as the Green Bay Water Utility, Department of Public Works, Green Bay Metro, and the Green Bay Fire Department.

Public Works Director Steven Grenier and Green Bay’s Mayor Eric Genrich marked the reopening of the road with a ceremony that was held on November 4.
