NeighborWorks Green Bay has been awarded $50,000 in recognition of its ‘Farmory’ project.
The grant was given to the organization by Wells Fargo and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. A 2015 ‘Outstanding Achievement Community WINS Award’, the grant recognized NeighborWorks for its efforts in the community. Indeed, WINS stands for ‘Working/Investing in Neighborhood Stabilization’.
The investment in this case is the intriguing project NeighborWorks has undertaken to transform a former armory into a working, indoor farm. The armory, located on Chicago Street, comprises 20,000 square feet, providing the space needed for farming indoors in a city that regularly experiences brutal winters. The farm, according to NeighborWorks, will provide entrepreneurial opportunities and job training for people living in nearby neighborhoods. The organization also said the project will be profitable, as well as benefiting both people and the earth.
Jim Schmitt, the mayor of Green Bay, nominated the Farmory project for the award. There were six winners from among 162 nominations, and Noel Halverson, executive director of NeighborWorks Green Bay, expressed his gratitude to the mayor for the nomination, saying it had raised the level of excitement in the project and led to people reaching out to NeighborWorks.
With interest in the Farmory building, NeighborWorks might like to work with brochure printers to create a booklet for Mailing to area residents, informing them of the project and inviting their participation.Get a Free Quote for Mailing
