Eau Claire Jazz Festival aims to capture spirit of 52nd Street

Wisconsin is not an area historically associated with jazz, but an Eau Claire festival this April will look to summon a little bit of that history with a celebration of the past, present and future of the uniquely American musical genre.

The festival will see Eau Claire’s Barstow Street transformed into a replica of New York’s 52nd Street, the legendary location where jazz greats like Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker played regularly and jammed together during the 1950s and ‘60s. A lot has changed since then, and jazz has spread over the world, with the flyer printing and banner printing often used to advertise shows seen from Japan to Africa.

The 2020 Jazz Festival will be headlined by vocal artists Diane Schuur and trumpeter Sean Jones. Over 60 modern bands and artists will participate, ranging from student bands to international recording stars. Young musicians will have the chance to learn from professionals through special sessions, and the best will be selected to perform on the same stage.

The Eau Claire Jazz Festival will take place on April 24 and 25. Most events will occur as part of the “jazz crawl” down Barstow Street and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Campus, with Schuur and Jones headlining concerts taking place at the Pablo Center at the Confluence on both days.
