Eau Claire film festival prepares to get weird

The MidWest WeirdFest, a film festival that looks to highlight strange and unsettling independent films, will be returning to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for its 4th installment this March.

WeirdFest is a three-day bacchanalia of lower-budget movies, typically in the horror and science fiction genres, but also including documentaries, animated shorts, and more. Already announced are features like The Fear of Looking Up, a mixture of police drama and the horror of H. P. Lovecraft, On the Trail of UFOs, a documentary about amateur alien hunters, and Puppet Killer, a self-explanatory horror-comedy flick. More of the festival lineup, selected from an open call for submissions, will be announced in the weeks to come.

The festival will conclude with an awards ceremony in which selected movies will take home trophies like “Independent Spirit Award” or “Best Sci-Fi Short”, with one entry being simply proclaimed “Best Film.”

For many filmmakers, seeing their vision on the big screen with a receptive audience will be reward enough. Festivals like these are a haven for smaller films, often advertised through imaginative poster and banner printing, which offer less financial reward but greater creative freedom than studio blockbusters.

The 2020 edition of the MidWest WeirdFest will take place from March 6 to 8 in Eau Claire. The main venue will be the Micon Downtown Budget Cinema, but past festivals have also held screenings at locations like Eau Claire Games and Arcade, and Ivy Creatives.
