The city of Eau Claire has announced that Ken Szymanski will be its newest Writer in Residence, to serve a two-year term beginning this year.
Szymanski is best known as a poet who has specialized in performance, winning two Grand Slam titles in the Eau Claire Running Water Poetry Slam and reading on radio programs like Wisconsin Life. Among his more eccentric endeavors is an extensive “choose your own adventure” which Szymanski has been continuously revising and holding interactive readings from since eighth grade. He has published Blue Light Special, a collection of work in various genres, and teaches at DeLong Middle School.
As poet laureate, Szymanski’s mission is to engage the people of Eau Claire with literature. He already hosts the Writers Read series at the L. E. Phillips Library, and wants to expand his outreach to nursing homes and classrooms. His upcoming project “Snapshots” will invite writers to use photographs for inspiration. Szymanski also aims to partner with programs like Writers Anonymous and the Chippewa Valley Book Fest. Literary events like these are typically promoted through means like flyer printing, social media and banner printing, and can be a great means for writers of any experience level to connect and get inspiration.
The Eau Claire City Council officially announced Szymanski as Writer in Residence on April 28.
