Kent celebrates Lunar Rover with moon-themed event

To mark the half-century anniversary since the Apollo 11 mission landed the first two humans on the moon, the City of Kent will celebrate its own contribution to space exploration this month.

In the 1960s and early ‘70s, Boeing employees based at the company’s plant in Kent designed and built the Lunar Rover, also known as “moon buggy”, a vehicle that allowed humans to drive and cover greater distances on the surface of the moon.

The Lunar Rover was used on later Apollo missions, and Kent wants to recognize and protect this contribution to lunar exploration. Later this month, officials from the City of Kent and other advocates will request that the King County Landmarks Commission give historic landmark designation to the three Lunar Rovers, which were abandoned during their mission and are still on the moon.

The request will be coupled with a party in the Kent City Hall Lobby, where attendees can enjoy some food with a space-theme, and chat with some of the Boeing employees who helped build the Lunar Rover.

Important civic events like this can have a greater impact when using printing services such as poster printing, banner printing, and informational brochure printing. It is hoped the designation will help educate and inspire future generations about space travel and engineering, according to the City of Kent website.

The Landmark Commission Meeting is Thursday, July 25 at 5:00 pm at the Kent City Council Chambers on Fourth Ave. S.
