What's Happening in Kent, WA…

Free repairs available at new tool library

Kent residents with faulty appliances, tattered clothing, or broken toys have a chance to get a repair done free of charge next month.

The Repair Cafe is an event organized by the South Tool Library, an innovative new shop in Federal Way where residents can borrow hammers, wrenches, and saws in a process that resembles borrowing books from a library.

The Repair Cafe recruits volunteer repair experts to sew, screw, and solder broken items brought into the shop. The service is free for everyone.

If the experts cannot fix it, many times they can recommend what parts are needed or the best way forward. However, the “fixers” have a success rate of 85%.

The event is designed to be day of learning and fun for the entire family. There will be kids workshops, refreshments, and volunteers will be giving tours of the tool library to raise awareness of the service.

Attendees are asked not to bring items that are too large, or that are leaking, dangerous or contain gasoline. They should also remember to bring any chargers, product manuals, or adapters as the experts may need them to make the necessary repairs.

The South King Tool Library's free Repair Cafe is scheduled for Saturday, July 25 from 10:00 am to 1 pm at the South King Tool Library, 1700 S 340th Street, in Federal Way, a quick 15-minute drive southwest of Kent. The event was postponed from March 28 due to COVID-19. Events such as these can benefit from business card printing and flyer printing.
