What's Happening in Kent, WA…

Cultural celebration returns to Kent this June

The 3rd annual Juneteenth Celebration in Kent is taking place in a matter of weeks. It is a presentation of the Kent Black Action Commission.

Several communities throughout the country celebrate Juneteenth each year with different kinds of public events. It is a celebration of the fact that slavery officially came to an end in the United States on June 19, 1865.

As in the past two years, the Kent event will feature musical entertainment, dance performances, educational lectures, and a variety of speakers. There will also be children's activities such as games and face painting, vendors, and guest speakers. Vendors will be selling everything from arts and crafts to books; many local community organizations are also expected to be hosting informational booths.

This day-long event is free to attend and open to everyone in the area, and is a chance for neighbors to get to know each other and to value their shared history. Organizers will probably try and make the Kent celebration more festive by decorating the area with colorful signs and banners. Local print companies are often asked to provide these items and can do so for a price that will fit any budget.

The Juneteenth Celebration will be held at Morrill Meadows Park on June 21 from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. To find out more about the day's events, or about Juneteenth itself, call 253-852-0614.
