Conservation event in Kent
Volunteers have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and help Kent parks at the same time.
The upcoming Arbor Day Volunteer Conservation Event needs volunteers who will work hands-on with Kent Parks. The day is a celebration of Kent’s status as a Tree City USA, which it has held for 22 years. To be designated a Tree City, a community is required to meet four standards set by the Arbor Day Foundation. It must celebrate Arbor Day, have a Tree Board, a tree ordinance, and spend a minimum of $2 per person on urban forestry.
Morrill Meadows Park will be the site of the activity, during which volunteers will work in an area that was once taken over by blackberry, an invasive species, that was previously removed by Kent Parks staff and volunteers. Now people will return to that spot to plant shrubs, trees, and pollinator plants.
Members of the community of every age are welcome and encouraged to join the activity, especially if they are students. They will earn community service hours, as well as gaining valuable experience and knowledge.
The Arbor Day event is set for November 4, from 9.00am until 12.00pm. The main parking lot for the Morrill Meadows park is closed, so volunteers will need to park at the Kent YMCA/upper Morrill Meadows Park lot. Check-in for the event is near the dog park. Organizers of events like this can use flyer printing to create instruction sheets for the volunteers.
