STEM programs to be promoted with Tomball grant

Lone Star College (LSC) in Tomball has been awarded a grant of $2.8m as part of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and Articulation Program from the United States Department of Education.

The grant, which will be allocated over the next five years, will be used to increase the number of students from Hispanic backgrounds to obtain degrees in STEM fields. Other uses of the funds will be for increasing the transfer rate of students between LSC and the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD). Announcements of such special grants are often made known throughout a community with banner printing.

The Science First Success Center is being planned by LSC. The center will employ guided pathways and integrated centralized academic support to streamline requirements for STEM degrees and support staff and faculty with professional development to implement changes in the curriculum. In addition, UHD and LSC will collaborate to strengthen the pathway from one college to the other and to improve communications that will create a culture of engagement between the institutions.
