The Bravo Company will be presenting an evening of “musical tragical comedy”, which will be a parody of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The musical presentation is called Romeo and Harriet. The plot will loosely follow Shakespeare’s original course with a few exceptions.
The story is set in present day New York and the feuding houses are the second rate Capulet’s Discount Mart and the swanky Montague’s Department store. The opening scene begins with clerks from each store meeting in the street and insulting each other in rhymed iambic pentameter, with pie fights instead of duels. The performance will be in two and a half acts.
Words are hurled back and forth instead of daggers, and the result, according to the Bravo Company, will be an evening of side-splitting hilarity.
To give some idea of what is in store for the attendees, the names have been changed a bit. Some of the quarrelers will be Risotto, Antipasto, Mayo, Oregano, Carpaccio, Prosciutto, Pesto, and Romano. Not quite the tragedy he has in mind, Oregano proclaims his disappointment when the play ends with no dead bodies. These performances may be good introductions to Shakespeare for the younger crowd.
