Conroe puts on its running shoes

Woodforest is having its annual charity run in a couple of weeks.

There will be a one-mile Fun Run, a 10K, a 5K, and a Barkley Shoe Dash. All proceeds will go to the Woodforest Charitable Foundation, and all ages will be welcome.

The morning will begin with the one-mile run. The 10K and the 5K will come next. USA Track and Field will sanction these certified runs. The Barkley Shoe Dash will be the last event.

Winners of all races will be announced at the awards ceremony immediately following the last race.

The Barkley Shoe Dash will begin in front of Heritage Place Park on Simonton Road. Runners will wear one shoe to begin the race, run 50 yards, pick out their other shoe from a pile of competitors’ shoes, put the shoe on and race back to the starting line.

Those who are not in the race but want to know what’s happening can sign up for live tracking alerts by downloading a Racejoy mobile app. The app will give continuous live phone tracking and progress reports. Alerts also tell the spectator when the runners are near. Some people in the crowd may want to bring Banners to show support for their favorite runners.

The event is scheduled for September 17, with the first race starting at 7:15 am at 500 Metcalf Street here in Conroe.
